Memorial Day Is Not Just A Day Off
This Memorial Day, let’s not forget what this holiday is truly about as we enjoy family picnics, outdoor games, and hunting for bargains at the mall: Honoring the men and women of the Armed Forces who gave their lives in the service of our country.
I encourage you to take a moment this holiday weekend and think about the legions of fallen soldiers and their families left behind throughout our nation’s history. All of us need a reminder of the sacrifices made by those brave souls who fought to make the U.S. a better country. They have kept our liberties strong.
Better yet, take your family to a Memorial Day event. Let your children see real veterans. Let them salute the flag in the company of soldiers. (A simple online search is likely to provide a listing of multiple events in your community.)
While honoring the fallen, let’s also be thinking of the veterans of today, and how badly many of them need our help.
Close to 850,000 veterans are without jobs, upwards to 135,000 are homeless, and another 1.5 million is on the verge of homelessness due to poverty and a lack of support networks.
They, too, need to be in our prayers.
Have a great holiday.
